Definition
A hash rate unit measures how many hash calculations a miner, pool, or network can perform per second. In cryptocurrency mining, these units describe computing speed, usually written as hashes per second, such as TH/s or EH/s. Larger units make modern mining hardware and network-scale power easier to compare.
How It Works
Mining hardware repeatedly runs data through a cryptographic function to search for a valid block hash. Each attempt is one hash, and hash rate units count how many attempts happen every second. For Bitcoin, this is part of proof of work, where miners compete to find a hash below the current difficulty target.

Small devices may be discussed in MH/s or GH/s, while modern Bitcoin ASIC miners are usually measured in TH/s. Mining pools and entire networks are often measured in PH/s or EH/s because they combine many machines. A miner rated at 200 TH/s makes about 200 trillion hash attempts per second.
Why It Matters
Hash rate units help miners compare hardware, estimate rewards, and understand scale. A higher hash rate gives a miner more chances to find valid shares or blocks, but it does not guarantee profit.
Miners also compare hash rate against power use, hardware price, pool fees, and electricity cost. A machine with more TH/s may be less attractive if it uses too much electricity. This is why efficiency, often measured in joules per terahash, is as important as raw speed.
Hash rate units also matter at the network level. When total network hash rate rises, mining difficulty usually adjusts upward so blocks are not found too quickly.
